Gingerbread
Ingredients
- 12oz (3 cups) plain flour
- 1 level tsp. bicarbonate of soda
- 2 level tsps. ground ginger
- 4oz butter
- 6oz (1 cup) soft brown sugar
- 4 tbsps golden syrup
- 1 egg, beaten
- Chocolate drops, chocolate buttons, icing, etc for decoration
Instructions
- Pre-heat the oven to 190°C (375°F/gas mark 5)
- Sift together the flour, bicarbonate of soda and ground ginger
- Rub the butter into the sifted ingredients with fingertips
- Add the sugar and mix well
- Warm the syrup slightly and stir into the mixture, with the egg, to give a pliable dough
- Knead until smooth and roll out on a floured board to 1/8-in thickness
- Cut out shapes as required, and gently lift onto a greased baking sheet, keeping them well apart
- For gingerbread men, you can use chocolate drops for eyes/nose/buttons/etc and half a chocolate button for a mouth
- Bake for 10-15min until evenly coloured, and cool on a wire rack.
